Today Akamai Technologies is a content delivery network (CDN), cybersecurity, and cloud service company, providing web and internet security services. Akamai’s Intelligent Edge Platform is one of the world’s largest distributed computing platforms. Our company operates a network of servers worldwide and rents capacity on these servers to customers who want their websites to work faster by distributing content from locations near the user.

When a user navigates to the URL of an Akamai customer, their browser is directed by Akamai’s domain name system to a proximal edge server that can serve the requested content. Akamai’s mapping system assigns each user to a proximal edge server using sophisticated algorithms such as stable matching and consistent hashing, enabling more reliable and faster web downloads. Further, we implement DDoS mitigation and other security services in our edge server platform.

Replication & Automatic fail-over:

At Akamai we provide cloud computing services and software products to provide a secure platform for customer applications. Applications and enterprises can build on our technology through partner programs for customised pricing, delivery and business models. Additional cloud expertise can be brought in via cloud partners to help flow charge back to particular departments.

Core components of its software include: Multi–Geo deployment: applications are replicated at various locations; this provides IT teams the ability to architect applications that automatically fail over nation wide – or worldwide – to the next nearest location, without any programmer action required.
Cloud Security Platform provides filtering, malware scanning and failure handling functionality at the platform level, going between end users and the Akamai platform. Monitoring provides customers with tools to define SLAs and monitor application performance and internet “health” across Akamai‘s network of servers.

Delivery Methods:

The Secure Content Delivery Platform (SCDP) is one of the most prevalent delivery methods to creating secure sites and apps. SCDP encompasses a broad range of products in the Akamai Toolkit that can be used to set up just–in–time content delivery infrastructure and a network infrastructure that can block threats. Many high–traffic websites, use the Akamai Toolkit daily to produce high availability, and ensure content delivery.

With the rise in consumer demand using HTTP/2, content delivery requests are now served over the Akamai Intelligent Platform using the customer‘s original domain name. This enables the impact and cost of traffic on the client‘s network to be virtually eliminated.
